Confirmation that Netflix is coming (legally) to Italian homes this October
We've been wondering for months if Netflix would be coming to Italy, and it appears that the wait is over. Netflix has confirmed that it will launch in Italy in October of 2015, however we've heard this before. Back in 2014 there was speculation that an Italian launch was delayed due to technical reasons, primarily a lack of adequate broadband internet required for the streaming of high quality video. It is currently reported that 61% of Italian internet connections have speeds over 4 Mbps, which is generally accepted as the minimum internet speed recommended for high definition video content.
The service will provide online streaming of a wide selection of movies and television series' in high-definition or even Ultra HD 4k. As usual with previous regional releases, Netflix has not provided a complete TV Show or Movie catalogue listing to showcase what they will be offering, although they have stated that they will be providing a slate of Netflix Originals including:
- Bloodline
- Sense8
- Grace and Frankie
- Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
- Marvel's Daredevil
- Marco Polo
They also promise critically acclaimed documentaries, stand-up comedy specials, and a wide variety of family and kids programming, with most titles offering subtitles and dubbing in Italian. Exact pricing will be released closer to October, however pricing packages are expected to be consistent with other European countries, with different pricing tiers based on video quality and the number of users that can stream video at the same time. However, since less than 10% of internet connections in the country have download speeds above 15Mbps (the minimum recommended speed for 4k Ultra HD), the higher priced packages may not create as many sign-ups as in other countries such as the United States.
